Bio & 'Karma Waters' album info

Nook & Cranny are a psychedelic, ambient & progressive/space rock duo based in London, UK.  The band is formed by Dean Cass (drums & percussion) and Matt Sullivan (guitars, bass, synth & samples).

Dean and Matt first met and started playing music together in Fremantle, Australia in 2009 whilst Dean was on an extended backpacking trip, before relocating to London, United Kingdom in 2011.  Together they played in the bands Silent Republic, Moon and Astral Lynx until 2017, releasing numerous albums, EPs and singles and playing live shows in Western Australia and the United Kingdom.

Nook & Cranny started as a side project in down time between sessions and travelling, with Dean and Matt going into the rehearsal studio just for fun every few months to jam and improvise music together, but in 2023 Dean & Matt decided to hit the recording studio and cut a record.

The guitars and drums for all songs on the album were recorded in early 2024 during four improvised jam sessions over a couple of weekends at Bally Studios in London.  The guitar and drum tracks were recorded as pure improvisations, with no prior writing or rehearsing.  Following the sessions in Bally Studios, the lengthy jams (some 30+ minutes long)  were then trimmed down to the best parts and minimal overdubs (such as bass, synth and samples) were added later in Matt's home studio Flighthouse.

The band mixed and mastered the album themselves in 2025, and the album is scheduled for release on 1 February 2026 on all major streaming services.

The album name 'Karma Waters' was inspired by the name of a boat that was moored on the canal next to the recording studio.  The polaroid cover artwork was taken around the studio and in Soho, London - the instant lo-fi snapshots reflecting the improvised jams which underpin the album.
